Celebrating Female Entrepreneurs: Lana’s Boutique

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we look to one of Bronte’s longest running businesses, Lana’s Boutique. Lana’s has been open since 1989, and the Bronte BIA interviewed owner, Lana Miller, to talk about her experience as a successful female entrepreneur:

How has your experience been as a female entrepreneur since opening?

“I cannot say that I have faced any particular challenges as a female owner/operator other than the challenges of raising a family while trying to run a time-consuming business. That said however, I have faced numerous challenges running a business in Bronte. Bronte has not always been as desirable as it is today. I waited through many years of redevelopment for it to become as [desirable] as it is now. I always knew it was going to be a sought-after location, it just took a lot longer than anticipated. Living through the redevelopments have been difficult too, with road closures, construction traffic etc.  It has all been worth it though as Bronte in my opinion now offers so much to those who live here and get to experience the lake, the marina, the restaurants and the shopping experiences all within a nice easy walk.”

What message would you give aspiring female entrepreneurs?

“I would encourage all women who have it in them to start a business. I don’t think that being a woman is an obstacle to anyone these days as far as acceptance and advancement in the entrepreneurial world.”

How does your business play a role in empowering women?

“I believe my business can help empower women through confidence. To succeed in the business world as a man or a woman you need confidence and dressing sharp is one of the best ways to feel good about yourself when going out and securing a business opportunity. If you feel good about how you are dressed, your confidence will shine through.”
